TL;DR: you're here for free, you can leave anytime, and you can come back anytime.
Hi, neighbor. If you're reading this, your farm or business is probably on nearby.farm, the free farm map we built at Your Neighbor's Farmstand in Bel Alton. We're a farm family, so we know a farm is usually somebody's home too. This page is how we make sure the map treats it that way.
How you got on the map
We listed you from information your business already shares with the public - your website, your Facebook page, or a county farm guide. Nothing on this map is pulled in by a computer: every listing is looked up by hand by a real person, and the folks who shop there help keep it fresh.
If something we found is wrong, or you'd rather not be on the map at all, that's fine. Skip down to "Changing or leaving."
What the map shows
Your business name, what kind of place it is (farm stand, CSA, nursery and so on), and what you sell
Your town and state
Your season - and your hours only if you want them posted
Links to your website and social media
A freshness line: the date your listing was last checked
What the map never shows
Your street address, unless you ask for it. Listings are town and state by default. Farms with livestock or poultry stay town only. Stores show their address unless they tell us otherwise. The directions button can point to your website or social media instead, or come off entirely.
Photos. None on listings. Not one.
How you take payment. This is private. It's your business, not ours, and we don't put it on the map.
Ratings or reviews. No stars, no rankings, no thumbs, no Yelp, no tomatoes, nothing. This is a census, not a review site. We're here to connect farmers with people who want to buy from local farms, not to rank anyone or tell you who's better than someone else. Perspective is perspective.
A ranked list. The map doesn't show any listings until someone searches, so nobody looks like they're sitting at the top.
Free, always
It costs nothing to be listed, nothing to update your listing, and nothing to leave. There's nothing to upgrade to. The recommendations can't be bought, and nobody can pay for a higher spot on nearby.farm.
Who's paying for it, then
Me, mostly. nearby.farm is run by one independent farmer, and it does have real costs - the domain, the database, the hours. If the map is useful to you and you want to help keep it going, you can support it here: Friend of the Map.
We're also open to sponsors. We're new, so a sponsor ask lands better coming from someone who already knows the business. If you have a good relationship with a local business that sells to farmers, put in a good word for the map. Sponsors never touch listings.
If nobody confirms
Farms change - we get it, we are one. If a listing goes 20 months without a confirmation, the freshness line switches to "Not confirmed since..." After about two years with nothing, the listing goes dark. That means hidden, not deleted, and it'll come back fresh as new whenever you and your farm are ready.
Changing or leaving
Fix something, add your hours or street address, or pause for the season: email farms@yourneighborsfarmstand.com.
Come off the map: email leave@yourneighborsfarmstand.com with your business name and something that shows you're the owner (a note from the email on your website or Facebook page is plenty, and if we already know each other, your word is fine). No reason needed, no hard feelings, and removal requests go to the top of the pile.
Later on: about 9 to 12 months after you're listed, you'll get a short check-in email from farms@yourneighborsfarmstand.com with four buttons - Still open, Update my info, Pause for the season, Remove me. After that we'll check in about once a year. That's it - no newsletters, no sales pitches.
What we do with your information
We collect as little as we can, and we will never knowingly sell or misuse it. The full details are in our Privacy Policy.
Who's behind this
nearby.farm is made by Your Neighbor's Farmstand, our family farm and honor stand in Bel Alton, Charles County. Britt reads every submission. Our own stand is on the map too, and it gets checked like everyone else's.
Questions? Email hello@yourneighborsfarmstand.com. We're farmers, so in harvest season it might take us a day or two to get back to ya.
Know a farm we're missing? Tell us about it.
